Turkish Gamefowl & The Sport
The Turks have a long tradition raising and pitting gamefowl. In Turkey there is one breed dominating Turkish pits. Its the socalled "Hint Horoz". This name clearly indentifies the origin of this gamefowl breed Hindustan, the Turkish word for India. The Hint Horoz looks like a large Aseel, slender in type and pretty agile too. Fights are organised in almost every Turkish town and very big tournaments are organised in Istanbul, Izmir, Adana, Alanya, Antalya, Trabzon and other big cities. Since the 1950's Turkish guestworkers working all over Europe imported a lot of Asian gamefowl breeds like: Aseel and Shamo into their own country. These were partly crossed into the domestic "Hint Horoz" gamefowl. But a lot of Turks still stick to their beloved "Hint Horoz". Birds are pitted in endurance fights with naked heels as Islamic faith forbids any additions made (like artificial weapons) causing bloodshed. A lot of "Hint Horoz" are -exported- to Cyprus (Turkish & Greek territory), Greece, Russia and Balkan states.
