Not to many ppl realy put a lot of thought into their buying decsions when it comes to making their birds better. Most see something they like and try to buy hens. Problem is a lot of breeders only sell a few hens and have lots of roosters to sell. This can be a great advantage to breeders looking to up grade.
No matter what breed you raise if you have a good base of decient hens then a very good rooster will be an invaluble asset to your breeding program. If a breeder purchases a good hen and keeps his old hens breeding only the chicks of that hen are better than the average of the flock the next year. However if that same breeder buys an excellent cockbird the average of the whole flock will go up because the superior genetics of the new cock will be passed on to all the chicks.
In the end I would much rather put my money into one good rooster than to buy two or three good hens (assuming my current hens are not complete junk)
Keep this in mind as you look for birds to make your flocks better this season.
