Someone was selling a trio of Buff Columbian d'Anvers on eggbid for $150 (no one had bid) and the male at least looked a lot like a really light Quail to me. The female's body was almost all Buff, but she had a slightly mossy back (almost looked like a Quail pattern mossiness to me) and all of the feathers, even those that seemed pure Buff, had shafting and a faint sort of lacing. The person who was breeding them said that most Buff Columbians are created from Quails, and I think that maybe correct to his knowlegde soley concerning the d'Anvers...and maybe Quail and Buff Columbian share similar genetic roots which makes that possible, I don't know....but it seems to me that you would be able to get birds with a better Buff Columbian color if you just used Black d'Anvers and outcrossed to something else with a clearer Buff. That way you wouldn't have to deal with the shafting and lacing.
In fact, I would sort of like to create my own Buff Columbian d'Anvers, but I am not sure which path I want to take. There is a friend of mine who will give me some well spotted Mille Fleur d'Uccles, but some of her d'Uccles lack leg feathering (other than that they have good type for a d'Uccle). I was hoping to get a few of those and use some of them to eventually improve the color of my Mottled d'Anvers, and I thought that I would probably get some decent Buff Columbians off of the F2 generation (since buff is recessive to black)...anyway,I might try this, but would breeding lighter Quails together really be a better option? What do you all think?
Thanks, Kristen
