Is anyone out there using a tombaku or have used one in the past? How big was/is it?

Chickenman,
I don't have any experience with this type of housing yet, but I'm glad you posted on it. I am going to build some in the spring to keep some birds in. If we can get some ideas going here and exchange ideas, maybe we will come up with a good inexpensive design.

Pred,
I'll look up some of my links. It is a restrictive type of housing where the rooster is in a enclosure alone and sits on a perch. They live there for their whole lives and this allows the feathers to grow and not be distrubed. The roosters become very calm and docile from this type of housing. I'll try to post some links to show some examples soon.

I am using bunch of plywood scraps to build this one, but you can use a sheet of plywood and a 2 by 2 to make one 4 feet high 24 inches wide and 8 inches thick. Cut the plywood into two 4 by 4 squares. Cut one of those squares in half, these are your sides. Cut three pieces 8 inches wide and 4 feet long from the other square, and cut one of those strips in half. These are your front, back, top, and bottom. The rest of the plywood becomes your shelf for the bird to sit on and any thing else you want to do inside the coop or maybe you want braces somewhere. Cut the 2 by 2 into as many 8 inch long pieces as you want for the corners and shelf of the coop, and screw the sides and shelf onto these. Cut more pieces the same size to wrap the tail around. A pair of hinges for the door completes the thing. Hang it on the wall or a stand something somewhere quiet and preferably indoors. chickenman

I just posted two pics of tombaku on the other site. The first is similar to the one I described above, being small enough to keep on a table or hang on the wall, and the second is like the one I am building now, free standing and as tall as a person. The first is made from cabinet doors, if I remember right, and the second is cedar plywood and stock. The bird sits on the first perch, facing the window, and the tail is draped over the second. Feed and water cups are set in front, and a dropping pan is below the bird. The side is hinged to allow access and for cleaning purposes. The bird is taken out regularly and allowed to exercise under supervision.
