Hello, I have been keeping chickens since this spring but just received my first batch of 25 chicks in the mail this morning. I got some silver laced wyandottes, plymouth barred rocks and some buff orpingtons and they are absolutely the cutest thing ever and I'm very pleased--just wish I had more LOL!
Question is this: I took them out of the box 1 at a time and showed them the food and water (little sugar in the water this first time) and they all picked up that idea quickly. I noticed that one of the orpingtons was standing funny, she's standing with one leg propped way out in front of her and she favors it while walking. I've got pine shavings as litter with paper towels over the top because it's not as slippery as newspaper and so they won't eat the wood shavings. I have seen the splinting idea for spraddle leg but is this something I should do at this point or wait? Could this even be spraddle leg? Thanks for any help you can provide me! ~~Jillian

It sounds like spraddle leg. I used to try to save spraddle leg chicks but I've found they usually don't recover and the best thing to do is just do them in. You can try the splint if you want it doesn't hurt to try

Yes I agree. That probably is spradel legged. And my medicine chest for the birds, consists of a cockcidient, and a hachet. I've always seen no point in throwing good money after bad.
