I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the role BBR plays in enhancing Quail ground color. I have a Cuckoo hen with a recessive BBR gene and I used her in a cross with a Blue Quail cockerel to see what would result. In the original line of Quail/Blue Quail birds on the sire's side, the females were all decidedly lacking in a rich chocolate brown ground color. The chicks from the cross looked like really dark Creles at first....then when they matured the pullets turned out to be Quail and males were Barred Blue Quails. Both seemed to have better overall Quail patterns/ground color, etc. I have been debating on whether or not I should use these birds to breed back to help my Quail line out. Does anyone else know anything about this and/or have any suggestions? I included some pictures to show you what the birds look like. This is a hen from the original lineage. I consider this as the 'before' picture, lol. This is one of the resulting Quail pullets. A lot more brown than the parent strain and not as washed out on the wing bows: And just for fun a resulting Barred Blue Quail cockerel:
